What is the microbiome and what helps it flourish?
Your gut microbiome is the collection of trillions of microbes living within your GI tract, many of which are beneficial. If you can improve the health of those good microbes, they can in turn improve your own health.
Diversity is a key factor associated with a healthy intestinal microbiome. Each good microbial species and strain has its own unique set of benefits, plus they keep negative microbes in check—so the more types of beneficial bacteria you have, the more positive effects your body gets. So, everyone looking to improve the health of their microbiome should look for ways to improve its diversity.
One of the greatest influencers of microbial diversity are the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Since few are able to get enough omegas in their diet, supplementing with fish oil can bring all of the benefits. But, it’s not just any fish oil that’s going to produce the best results. What is the “Forgotten” Omega, and why is it important?
We refer to DPA as the “Forgotten” Omega because most fish oils leave it out (as it happens to be very difficult to capture). We relaunched an Aqua Biome blend richer in DPA, as its impact is tremendous. Unlike other omega-3s, it can be converted to either EPA or DHA whenever you need it.
In essence, DPA serves as a storage reservoir for both DHA and EPA, and as dietary intake of DPA increases, the tissue levels of both DHA and EPA increase. Without question, DPA is equally as important as EPA and DHA in fish oils, and data suggests it is an absolutely required component of any fish oil supplement. For example, population-based trials have demonstrated that higher levels of DPA in human blood are associated with increased degrees of reported health benefits common to fish oil supplementation.
